* Sustainability is:
True sustainability is not an appendage, a bandaid, a fix or marketing strategy. It's not a compartmentalized part of the mind or silo'd part of an organization. We've all had our awakening moments. Mine was 1995. When was your 'sustainability ah ha moment?' Within the paradox, no going back: When you've sat in the hut of an Indigenous (Achuar) medicine man in the middle of the most pristine jungle landscape and experienced instantaneous healing from a life threatening illness only to learn the next day this place was sold by Ecuador to a foreign mining company and a few years later you receive confirmation the magical vortex that saved you is now a copper mine, something is instilled inside of you that won't go away. When no 'advanced modern' method could help you for 2.5 years of struggle and pain, and ancient wisdom is what heals you, in a powerful energized virgin forest sitting upon a bed of activated copper resting deep in Earth in the Amazon Jungle, something inside of you knows we as humans have lost our way and are missing a huge opportunity to see the world through a more holistic lens. Copper is used in renewable energy. It will continue to be sought, people moved or disproportionately impacted, nature mined, water polluted, roads built, ecosystems damaged, forests cleared, people displaced and culturally harmed, and traditional knowledge lost.
And yes the benefits of copper are undoubtedly necessary in our world today. And so is the wisdom of our ancient counterparts, our brothers and sisters who live close to the land, with a deep understanding of traditional knowledge, wisdom we in the current economic paradigm have lost as we've learned and adapted to only modern ways. How do we define sustainable development? “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987)
True sustainability needs to balance the definition of those in resource (currency) scarcity with the definition of those who are resource rich including countries (leaders with wealth and power) and companies and marketers who are currently declaring the narrative. What is true now:
